How 4G is your 4G?

Back Nov 10, 2015

We've noticed that the three leading telcos in Malaysia have all claimed to have the 'widest', 'fastest' and 'best' 4G network. Although we'd like to say 'great minds think alike', it's clear that all three of us can’t all be right. And if this continues, Malaysians won't know who to trust. And that’s not good for any of us.

We believe it's important that when any telco claims 'No. 1 for 4G', it is backed up with tangible, measurable and truthful results, which is why Maxis has decided to reveal our 4G definitions and performance stats. Coverage is important but so is quality. So when Maxis publishes our (widest) coverage, we use stringent requirements for signal strength.

Malaysians who want the best Internet experience should have a fair basis for choosing. That's why we've been specific about our performance. We're inviting the media and the public to test our Maxis 4G for themselves. And we'd like to encourage Celcom & DiGi to do the same as well.

"When you're on a 4G network, you should expect buffer-free video streaming, quicker page loading, and consistently high speeds both indoors and outdoors. We have defined in technical terms exactly what Maxis aims for in terms of a great 4G experience. We are doing that because Malaysians who want the best 4G Internet experience should have a fair basis for choosing," says Morten Bangsgaard, Maxis CTO.

To discuss adopting common technical standards for 4G, Maxis also invited chief engineers from both Celcom and DiGi to join Maxis CTO Morten Baangsgard at an open forum on 4G on 23 November 2015.

What you should expect on Maxis 4G:

  • Zero buffering 98% of the time on YouTube SD
  • Zero buffering 96% of the time on YouTube HD
  • Top web pages (Google and Facebook) load fully in less than 8 seconds
  • Average 4G speeds exceed 15Mbps at all hours, both indoors and out
  • Ultra-fast speeds of up to 225MBps in areas where Maxis has already rolled out LTE-Advanced technology, the first Malaysian telco to do so
  • 90% 4G population coverage with signal strength of -98dBm in Klang Valley, Penang and JB
  • 60% 4G population coverage with minimum signal strength of -98dBm across all state capitals
  • 55% 4G population coverage with minimum signal strength of -98dBm nationwide
  • Zero buffering 98% of the time on YouTube SD
  • Zero buffering 96% of the time on YouTube HD

So, how 4G is really your 4G? Let's talk openly about it and clear the air.
